Winter 2009
by Sandra Gottlieb

"Winter 2009" is my most recent series of images relating to my personal connection to the sea. Having lived my life near the shores of the east coast of the United States, the endlessly shifting moods of the sea have proven irresistible to my camera's lens.

This winter has proven cold and isolating, and the Rockaway Beach shore in Queens, New York was softly gray and compellingly beautiful one Sunday morning, as yet another storm approached.

The air was freezing and eerily still as the sun made one last attempt at warming the earth, before the swirling snow covered sand and surf with a thick blanket of dense, white fog.

The photographer's point of view can sharpen the perception of a moment that is fleeting and transitory. Starting from what is complex, it is possible to reach what is simple and timeless.
