Waves In Black and White 2011
by Sandra Gottlieb "Waves In Black and White", 2011 is a series of seascapes photographed at the shore of the Atlantic Ocean in Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York. I began photographing the seashore in 1996 with the series, "Seascapes 1996 thru 2006", followed by "Winter" and "Summer", 2009. Color has always been an integral part of my images, enabling me to create a minimal interpretation of the vast sea and sky before us; and then printing in large sizes to achieve full impact. I photographed this series during the summer of 2011, and always at sunset when the light was at its most beautiful. Even though I was shooting in black and white, the fading light from the sunset lent a soft luminescence to the waves. A study in black and white allows the photographer to explore the most basic elements of composition: contrasting light, texture and form. It transforms an image into something more conceptual, deconstructing a scene and reducing it to its forms and tones. |
